There are a variety of screen readers to choose from, and each takes a while to learn and configure before you can use it efficiently to evaluate the accessibility of digital content. Configurations include hotkeys, voice selection, rate of speech, and more.
- NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), a free download from NVAccess for Windows-based PCs
- OpenAI add-on for NVDA – craft comprehensive text, translate passages with precision, concisely summarize documents, or interpret and describe visual content
- Narrator, a free screen reader included with the Windows 10 and 11 operating systems
- TalkBack, a free screen reader included with Android OS
- VoiceOver, a free screen reader included with Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and macOS operating systems.
- JAWS (Job Access With Speech) (requires a paid license); includes PictureSmart AI, an artificial intelligence tool that generates image descriptions
